NON-LAMP

I made this object for the exhibition Baccanale 2017, in Imola, Italy. This year the theme of the event was 'Sotto Terra', beneath the ground. Non-Lamp is related to potatoes and underground life. The aim is to bring to light the unknown world below the ground. I have been inspired by the potato plant, which grows under the soil, hiding potatoes from sun light and human beings. The project seeks to change our traditional point of view; the underground becomes visible and the potatoes come into view.

Through experimentation with alternative materials and research I made my first Non-Lamp prototype. Tubers were made using hot glue poured directly onto potatoes, essentially using them as a mold. Electric cables resemble the roots of the plant and are the connections to the power supply. The power supply is inside a transparent box in order to make visible all the parts of the object.

This object is not a lamp, in fact it does not provide enough light to illuminate a space. The idea proposes a change of perspective and a critical response to the objects of our time. Design has to be useful but it should not be limited to functionality; it must communicate, make us think, it must suggest meaning and inspire imagination. Non-Lamp represents bringing all that is unseen into view, so that the true nature of things can be understood.
If you want to have a look at this object, it is show at Museo San Domenico in Imola, until the end of this month.
